NanaWall - Large Exterior Openings

ADA/Egress

Design Requirements: Creating openings that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

As regulations governing the use of glazed windows, doors and storefronts and partitions vary widely, it is the responsibility of the building owner, architect, contractor or installer to insure that products selected conform to all applicable codes and regulations, including federal, state and local. NanaWall Systems, Inc. assumes no obligation or responsibility whatsoever for failure of the building owner, architect, contractor or installer to comply with all applicable laws, ordinances and safety building codes. However, there are some guidelines that may be applicable in certain commercial projects.

The Opening Glass Wall systems have been used successfully as a movable wall system in many different types of commercial applications. It is much more versatile than just an entry door. Generally, with the rest of the panels in the closed position, the primary swing panel can function as the entry door and can be used to meet primary entrance or other entrance requirements. Depending on conditions, only certain models may be suitable for use and may have to be slightly modified. Also, depending on the jurisdiction and if there are other accesses available, the primary swing panel may not need to comply with exit or access requirements.

Below are some of the different applications:

Use as entrance accessibility for the handicapped:

Some of the considerations for using an Opening Glass Wall unit as a primary entry panel as access for the handicapped are:

  1. Meeting requirement of 32" unobstructed access when the primary swing panel is open - use of any unit with 3 foot panels would meet this requirement.
  2. Meeting requirement of handle being located between 30" and 44" off the floor - all handles of door units are located between these heights from the bottom of the door panel unless specified otherwise.
  3. Meeting requirement of 10" uninterrupted surface of bottom rail - standard bottom rails do not meet this requirement, but any other bottom rail size is available as a special order.
  4. Meeting requirement that the threshold be no higher than 1/2" - use of the flat rise aluminum sill would meet this requirement for the Classic$ETHAN$ Wood Systems, and the flush sill would meet this requirement for other systems. Please note that this sill would not be as weather resistant as the raised threshold sills.

The lower track which has a greater than 9/16" width and greater than 7/8" depth can be an issue in certain jurisdictions. As the lower guide never rolls in the portion of the track in front of any swing panel(s) (except for units with unhinged pairs of panels), this gap can be permanently filled with a a suitable piece of wood or hard rubber. For the rest of the lower track a similar removable wood or hard rubber piece can be used when the panels are open. The HSW systems are available with no lower track.

  5. Meeting the requirement of the handle being operable by a single push, pull or downward motion - for all units, except SL 35 once the unit is unlocked, using the locking option with lever handles, the handle is operated by one downward motion.
  6. Meeting the requirement that the maximum push or pull effort on the door shall not exceed 8.5 lbs. pressure - the pressure on the door when there is no door closer is less than 8.5 lbs. A door closer with less than 8.5 lbs. pressure can be installed.
Use in other commercial Applications:

Below are some considerations if the primary entry panel of the Opening Glass Wall is used as an exit/entry door when the rest of the panels are closed:

  1. Meeting exit requirement that exit doors must swing outward - use of any outward opening unit would meet this requirement. In certain configurations of the SL 45 and WD 65 systems, the unit can be customized to have some panels swing or fold out and some panels swing or fold in.
  2. Meeting requirement that exit doors must be 3 feet wide - use of any unit that uses 3 feet wide door panels would meet this requirement. Units can also be customized such that the primary entry panel is 3 feet wide and the other panels are narrower.
  3. Meeting requirement that exit doors must have panic hardware - for all systems, the unit can be ordered without the standard operating and locking hardware on the primary entry panel and without any of the cuts or mortises to the door needed for this hardware. Appropriate panic hardware will have to be provided from other sources and installed on site.

Any appropriate door closer can be installed on the primary entry panel only where the primary panel is hinged to a side jamb. If a door closer is for a swing panel that is not attached to a side jamb, the door closer will have to be removed when folding the panels.

Health Code Requirements

In certain municipalities, for restaurants and cafes, provisions must be made to prevent flying insects. In addition to the NanaScreen option, air curtains are another alternative.
