Bird-Protection glass available for NanaWall opening glass walls has embedded ultraviolet patterns that birds see and avoid while remaining invisible to human sight.

As new buildings use more glass in their architecture, there are growing incidents of bird fatalities. In North America, between 100 million and 1 billion birds die every year flying into glass because they can’t tell reflections from trees, plants and sky. To reduce this growing problem, more and more cities are requiring that architects and developers take measures to design differently and seek out alternative glass.

The NanaWall with Bird-Protection glass will help save the lives of millions of birds, but still allow for glass in architecture.

NanaWall Systems is the first large opening glass wall company in North America to offer bird-protection glass that is not discernible to the human eye. The NanaWall is now available with the Bird-Protection glass. This recently developed glass from Germany includes ultraviolet patterns that make the glass visible to birds but still transparent to humans.

Bird-Protection Glass is designed to reduce bird collisions into buildings with large glass surfaces.

How does it work?

• Birds can see light in the ultraviolet spectrum

• The Bird-Protection glass has a coating with ultraviolet patterns to make glass visible to birds but transparent to humans

• Ornilux premium is an insulating glass that works with all NanaWall folding and sliding glass systems

• Ornilux standard is single laminated glass that works with NanaWall All Glass Window Wall Systems

Research

The Max-Planck-Institute for Ornithology carried out a study at the ornithological station in Radolfzell, Germany. They tested 17 different coated glass samples to test glass recognition for a representative sample of 19 wild bird species. The “bird protecting glass” with absorbing and reflecting stripes was especially effective at reducing bird impacts.

Bird-Safe Design Standards are part of the LEED v. 3.0 from the U.S. Green Building Council and have recently been required for new buildings by the cities of Toronto, Chicago, New York and San Francisco.
