Performance of the HSW50 NanaWall® - Testing Results

Excerpts of results of 2 units tested by Architectural Testing, Inc., an independent testing laboratory, in February 2000. Unit 1 was a nominal 10' wide x 9'10" high three panel unit with 2 sliding panels and 1 swing panel attached to the side jamb and with standard 3 point locking. Unit 2 was a nominal 10'5" wide x 8'2" high three panel unit with 2 sliding panels and with middle sliding panel having an incorporated swing panel with latch and 3 deadbolts.

Air Infiltration: ASTM E-283, ft.3/min/ft.

Unit 1: @ 1.57 psf (25 mph): 0.18 @ 6.24 psf (50 mph): 0.44

Unit 2: @ 1.57 psf (25 mph): 0.27 @ 6.24 psf (50 mph): 1.11

Water Penetration - ASTM E-547-86

Standard sill:

  • No uncontrolled water entry @ 3.75 psf (38 mph) subject to the following adaptations of the sill in the field by others:
  1. Remove the gaskets covering the inner channel.
  2. Drill weep holes through the bottom of this channel (about one 1" x 1/4" weep hole per panel.)
  3. Drill weep holes through the bottom of the sill or lower front face of the sill to drain water collected to a lower point (about one 1" x 1/4" weep hole per panel.)

Please note that due to varying site requirements and conditions, these sills will not be prepared for drainage by NanaWall Systems, Inc. If this drainage system is desired, we recommend that a qualified professional construct this system on the project site strictly in accordance with instructions provided by NanaWall Systems, Inc. and in accordance with good waterproofing techniques. Note that in some applications drain connections may not be possible.

No uncontrolled water entry @ 5.25 psf (45 mph) subject to this further modification in the field:

1. Add 1" wide U-channel on the inside with weepholes that drains through bottom channel of the sill.

  • Structural Load Deflection - ASTM E-330-90: pass
  • Standard Unit 1
    • Design Pressure (positive) with Standard Locking: 20 psf (88 mph) Design Pressure (negative) with standard locking: 20 psf (88 mph)
    • Design Pressure (negative) with Reinforced Locking: 40 psf (125 mph) Design Pressure (positive) with Reinforced Locking: 40 psf (125 mph)
  • Unit 2
    • Design Pressure (positive) with Reinforced Locking: 40 psf (125 mph)
    • Design Pressure (negative) with Reinforced Locking: 40 psf (125 mph)

See Design Windload Charts below for other sized panels.

* Note that the structural test pressures were 50% higher than the design pressure.
