Event spaces today are expected to do more than host a single type of gathering. From weddings and corporate receptions to community programs and private celebrations, venues need to adapt quickly while still feeling intentional and welcoming. Retractable glass doors support this flexibility by allowing event spaces to shift between open-air and enclosed environments, creating venues that feel expansive, functional, and connected to their surroundings.
Let’s take a look at how six impressive commercial projects redefined art and event space design with flexible design solutions and the patron experience in mind.
The Benefit of Retractable Glass Doors in Event Space Design
What Does an Event Space Need to Succeed
Successful event space design must balance flexibility, comfort, ease of use, and guest experience. Layouts often need to change from one event to the next, sometimes within the same day. Spaces also perform best when they feel open, naturally lit, and easy to move through.
In addition, event venues must manage acoustics, temperature control, and weather protection while ensuring staff can operate the space efficiently. All this culminates in higher ROI, positive attendee reviews, and reliable venue operations throughout the year.
The Benefit of NanaWall Retractable Glass Doors in Event Spaces
Retractable glass doors allow event spaces to expand beyond their fixed footprint. When open, they create seamless transitions to patios, courtyards, or terraces, increasing usable areas and supporting larger gatherings. When closed, they maintain transparency while helping protect against wind, rain, or temperature changes. This adaptability makes it easier for venues to host events across seasons without compromising comfort or performance.
NanaWall systems have been independently tested for air, water, structural, operation, forced entry, and sound control with excellent results, ensuring durability and peace of mind. Each system has been tested for 20,000 opening and closing cycles, which equates to 27 years of reliable operation. Meanwhile, our swing doors are tested to 500,000 cycles.
Customizable Features for Any Commercial Space
Every event space design has different demands, which is why retractable glass doors can be customized in size, frame material, and even frame color. Specifications such as high-performance glazing, swing doors, higher kickplates, panic hardware and door closers (by others), ADA-compliant sills, and acoustic options support venues for everyday commercial use.
Plus, with our over 200 powder coating options, opening glass systems can be customized to match any brand aesthetic or theme. With the right system in place, retractable glass doors become a functional design solution that helps event spaces operate smoothly while creating memorable environments for guests.
Event Space Design: 6 Successful Venues with Retractable Glass Doors
Doris Duke Theatre—Becket, Massachusetts
The new Doris Duke Theatre at Jacob’s Pillow showcases adaptability, flexibility, and connection in its performance and event spaces. Designed by Mecanoo with Marvel and built by Allegrone Companies, the 19,300-square-foot timber venue includes adaptable seating for 220 to 400 guests, retractable glass doors, and gathering areas that open directly to the landscape.
Two NanaWall Generation 4 folding glass door systems, one six-panel and one eight-panel, create a combined 53-foot-wide opening, allowing the lobbies and interior spaces to transition seamlessly to the shaded veranda and garden. By bringing daylight, fresh air, and the outdoors into the theatre experience, the systems support a venue connected to nature while remaining highly functional year-round for performances and events.
Wellfield Botanic Gardens—Elkhart, Indiana
The Visitor Center at Wellfield Botanic Gardens was designed by Arkos Design as a gathering space that celebrates transparency, daylight, and framed views of the surrounding landscape. Anchored by the Great Hall, the building’s layout allows the two flanking event rooms and the central rotunda to function independently or to open into a single, expansive venue for larger programs.
To support this flexibility, while maintaining uninterrupted sightlines to the gardens, the team selected NanaWall FSW75 frameless folding systems to easily reconfigure the space as needed. With floor-to-ceiling glass, subtle decorative glass treatment, and panels that stack neatly away, the completed visitor center offers a seamless indoor-outdoor experience that reinforces the garden’s mission while creating a welcoming gathering space for guests.
Rare Violins of New York—New York
Rare Violins of New York, designed by MCC-architecture PLLC in Manhattan, was envisioned as an immersive, old-world setting where rare antique instruments could be experienced in an elegant and adaptable environment. The space blends rich color, vintage décor, and modern detailing while accommodating private concerts for a distinguished clientele.
To connect the grand reception area to a performance space overlooking Central Park, the team specified a large-scale NanaWall bifold door with a French door opening configuration. Key door customizations for them were a higher kickplate and simulated divided lites that complement the classic feel of the space. The 22-foot-wide NW Acoustical 545 with unit STC 41, the only acoustically-rated interior wood system available, creates a full-width opening that supports intimate musical events while providing the “wow” moment that defines the arrival experience.
The Woods at Camp Geneva—Holland, Michigan
The Woods at Camp Geneva, designed by Gen1 Architectural Group, was created as a year-round gathering space that captures the wonder of summer camp while remaining welcoming in every season. Serving as an auditorium and community hub, the facility was envisioned to fully immerse campers and retreat guests in the surrounding lake and wooded landscape.
A 20-foot-wide NanaWall SL70 opening glass door allows the building to transform from a cozy indoor venue into an open-air pavilion, bringing in the sounds, movement, and energy of camp life beyond the glass. Selected for its durability in Michigan weather and its ability to create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience, the system has become central to how The Woods supports worship services, performances, and everyday connection.
Hilton North Scottsdale
The Hilton North Scottsdale at Cavasson offers a dynamic array of 14 event spaces spanning over 16,000 square feet, designed to accommodate a range of functions, from private meetings to large celebrations. In the Kasota Grand Ballroom, a 50-foot-wide sliding stacking glass door integrates seamlessly into the space with two discreet parking bays and an ADA-compliant flush sill, allowing celebrations to seamlessly spill into the courtyard.
Across from the Kasota Grand Ballroom, the Ironwood Ballroom offers a more intimate setting for events that prioritize acoustical privacy. Here, a NanaWall Generation 4 acoustically-rated folding glass door, with a sound control rating of unit STC 40, delivers a minimalist aesthetic with the slimmest frames, allowing the event space to spill into the spacious hallway or close off for private gatherings.
The Farm at Ridgeway—Ridgeway, South Carolina
The Chapel at The Farm at Ridgeway was envisioned as a timeless, traditional venue, enhanced by a modern indoor-outdoor connection. Designed as a clean, classic canvas for weddings and gatherings, the space uses natural light and surrounding views as a central architectural feature.
Four 9-panel NanaWall NW Aluminum 640 bifold doors create an open-air chapel experience, allowing the interior to expand seamlessly to the landscape while still offering the option to enclose the space without losing transparency. The result is a flexible, light-filled setting where couples and guests can feel immersed in the beauty of the outdoors while celebrating in an adaptable environment.
Final Thoughts
Event space design excels when it embraces flexibility, welcoming large celebrations, intimate gatherings, and everything in between. Retractable glass doors make that kind of adaptability possible, helping venues expand their footprint, strengthen indoor-outdoor connection, and create environments that feel open, memorable, and easy to operate year-round. As these six projects show, flexible opening glass systems are a practical design solution that supports better guest experiences, stronger functionality, and event spaces that truly respond to the people and moments they’re built for.
