Designing a home for modern-day living takes on a whole new meaning at this custom-built home in Camas, Washington. Overlooking a lush golf course and offering prime views of Mt. Hood’s snowy peaks, the residence embodies modern luxury and green living—from its smart-tech integrations to flexible design solutions, such as a NanaWall folding glass door.
Envisioned from the ground up by Urban Northwest Homes LLC, the 5,445 square-foot residence is a masterclass in net-zero custom home building and organic modern design, where every square foot offers an opportunity to work, entertain, or simply sit back and enjoy the view from any of the home’s vast floor-to-ceiling windows. Let’s take a look.
A Showcase of Organic Modern Design with a Folding Glass Door
Net-Zero Home Design and Energy Efficiency
At Urban NW Homes, every home is built to a national green building standard, focusing on the six pillars of green building: energy efficiency, sustainability, health, unique designs, and third-party certification. Every design and material choice was selected to ensure the property achieved this certification. In addition, green homes are healthier, more durable, better for the environment, and cost less to operate.
Designing a net-zero home came with the challenge of balancing energy efficiency with aesthetics. Bi-directional EV charging provides whole-home power backup in the event of an outage, while solar power and smart systems helped the home achieve Net Zero Energy certification. In addition, energy-efficient systems, appliances, windows, and even the NanaWall folding glass door in the dining contribute to the home’s sustainable design and minimal environmental footprint.
“In this home, the Fairway Edge, we focused on all six pillars of our green building standards, but specifically the energy pillar, which is the net zero certification,” says Jerud Martin, owner of Urban Northwest Homes. “With any net-zero home that we build, the benefit to the homeowner is controlling the monthly electrical costs.”
A Custom-Built Home Envisioned for Indoor-Outdoor Living
The four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom residence started as floor plan drawings envisioned by Urban NW Homes in close collaboration with the homeowners. The empty lot overlooking the 9th hole was promising, offering inspiration for a three-level home that took full advantage of the site’s recreational opportunities.
Joining the vision was Jenna Kauzlaric, Director of Design and Client Relations at Urban NW Homes. The in-house designer aimed to create a design that not only looked beautiful but also reflected the homeowner’s personality and lifestyle, understanding how they live, what they love, and the atmosphere they wanted for each room.
“I focused on integrating sustainable features like passive solar design and high-performance windows, while still creating warm, inviting spaces,” says Kauzlaric. “By using natural materials and optimizing natural light, I was able to enhance both the home’s functionality and beauty, ensuring it aligned with its green goals.”
Organic Modern Design Prioritizes Light, Space, Function, and Feature Walls
The materials and color palette were chosen to be warm and inviting, with a focus on comfort and continuity throughout, making the transition from inside to outside feel effortless. On the upper level, two bedrooms and the primary suite reflect this organic modern interior design, with neutral hues, earthy-textured walls, and abundant natural light. All key rooms have feature walls, from the shimmering pink mica wall in the girl’s bedroom to the NanaWall folding glass door in the dining room.
In the primary bedroom, a sense of openness is elevated by double-height ceilings and a wall of windows with prime views of the landscape. Adjacent, the primary bathroom offers a private oasis complete with a walk-in shower, freestanding bathtub, floating cabinets, and elegant stone pillars that mirror the stone fireplace in the living room. Plus, a luxurious walk-in closet with unique storage buildouts.
“My favorite feature is how we brought natural stone, organic finishes, and wood elements throughout the home to blend seamlessly with the stunning golf course views,” says Kauzlaric. “These materials create a sense of warmth and connection to the outdoors, making the interior feel grounded and inviting.”
Open-Concept Living Spaces Invite Light and Relaxation
At the main level, the custom-built home welcomes guests into a two-story great room with white oak floors and expansive windows, and a folding glass door that frames the golf course below. Centering the space is a 72-inch gas fireplace finished in textured plaster and anchored by two natural Salt Flat stone pillars. The furniture, with its soft textures and natural colors, invites relaxation, while a large-screen TV and built-in media center make it the ideal spot to catch up on the latest TV show.
“Whether it’s the stone fireplace or the Rift White Oak cabinets in the kitchen and living areas, it adds texture and depth,” says Kauzlaric. “I think this will delight the homeowners every day because it brings the beauty of nature inside, making the home feel both cozy and sophisticated—perfect for both everyday living and entertaining.”
A Dream Kitchen Space for Cooking and Entertaining
Kauzlaric’s vision for the interiors was to create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, especially in key areas such as the kitchen, dining, and lounge. “The NanaWall system was central to this, so I focused on maximizing natural light and creating a sense of openness,” says Kauzlaric. “In the kitchen, I aimed for a clean, modern, organic aesthetic with functional design elements that connected easily to the dining and great room.”
Built-ins by Vixon Cabinets warm the modern aesthetic in the kitchen. State-of-the-art GE Monogram appliances were thoughtfully selected for their durability and beauty. Rather than choosing a traditional wood hood, the designer opted for a framed-out hood with a faux Venetian plaster finish. This, in tandem with the kitchen island’s Cambria slab, enhances the space's organic modern feel. For seamless entertaining and additional storage space, a dual-entry butler’s pantry offers added convenience for day-to-day living.
Dining that Spills to the Outdoors
Adjacent to the kitchen, the dining room offers an elegant indoor-outdoor space for enjoying meals with a view. A nearly 8-foot-tall NanaWall folding glass door, in an open corner configuration, opens two sides of the space to the golf course and views of Mt. Hood. When open, the Generation 4 system seamlessly connects the interior living areas to the deck, where a cozy outdoor living area offers additional entertaining space in the open air. Here, the space provides a comfortable lounge complete with a fireplace that mirrors the Salt Flat stone from the great room.
“We wanted to make sure that the home didn’t just look out of the golf course, but actually connected to it,” says Martin. “That’s where NanaWall came in. You open the door system and suddenly the inside and the outside become one.”
Sleek Folding Glass Door in Striking Open Corner Design
The NanaWall NW Aluminum 640 was customized with eight double-glazed panels in a functional 23-foot-wide open corner configuration. The intentional design offers optimal landscape views and a seamless connection to the outdoor living room with an ADA-compliant Low Profile Saddle Sill. Its open corner design offers optimal space flexibility, allowing the homeowners to open five panels to the left or three panels to the right, depending on the needs of the day. For added convenience, the system was customized with a swing door, allowing quick in-and-out transitions when the panels are kept closed.
“Another valuable component with the NanaWall system is that it has an accessible threshold, and that has allowed us to achieve a universal design badge,” says Jerud. “What that means is people with mobility challenges can move around freely throughout this floor of the home and really experience all that the design of this home has to offer.”
A Flexible Design Solution for Year-Round Entertaining
Energy-efficient windows were key to achieving a net-zero custom-built home. By reducing energy loss, improving insulation, and optimizing passive solar heating and cooling, these windows are essential in sustainable design. When specifying the NanaWall folding glass door in the living room, the designer opted for double-glazed panels filled with insulating argon gas for optimal energy efficiency and year-round comfort.
The thermally broken system was the ideal choice for Washington’s cold weather seasons, allowing the family to enjoy dining by the window in optimal comfort. Plus, with the slimmest frames on the market, homeowners can enjoy nature views and maximum daylight throughout the seasons without obstruction.
“The NanaWall system really integrates into green building, and how I see it, it’s because it seals up very well, and we know that it’s going to keep all the water the Pacific Northwest throws at us completely outside, right where it should be,” says Jerud. “We’re not going to have any air leaks. We’re not going to have any water leaks. So, for the safety and security of our homeowners, the NanaWall system was really the perfect choice.”
Endless Amenities for Family Time and Hosting
Below the primary living spaces, on the lower level, wellness and entertainment converge in a series of interconnected rooms that spill out to the backyard. Here, a spacious lounge and media space, complete with a built-in wet bar and guest bedroom, invite guests and family alike to unwind and connect.
Adjacent, a fitness and yoga room, cold plunge, and sauna offer a private wellness retreat that rivals a luxury spa. Embracing the golf enthusiast lifestyle, a separate golf cart garage adds functional luxury and resort-like convenience. Together, these spaces transform the lower level into a dynamic extension of the home.
“We worked closely on everything from layout to color schemes, blending sophistication with family-friendly functionality,” says Kauzlaric. “Their appreciation for modern architecture, natural light, and organic materials really influenced the design, leading to a warm, inviting space with a timeless yet practical feel.”
