Sunset Strip Residence

Transforming a Hillside Home for Better Views

Sunset Boulevard is the framed home of movie stars and entertainment industry moguls. Running west from Hollywood into the hills overlooking Los Angeles, the homes on Sunset enjoy stunning views of the city. Many of the houses are quite old by Los Angeles standards, leading homeowners to renovate and make improvements. With the warm climate and panoramic vistas readily available, NanaWall is a natural fit for many remodeling projects.

"Maximizing the views was obviously a critical aspect of our design," recalls Vianny Boutry, who designed the renovation of this Hollywood home. Principal of Atelier Vianny Boutry, the architect recognized the challenges he faced delivering on his client's desires: An existing solid wall failed to maximize enjoyment of the views, even in spite of the large windows and French doors it contained.

Expanding Indoor-Outdoor Living on a Limited Hillside Site

Creating a terrace or deck of any real size or value would have been nearly impossible due to the steep slope of the property.

“The deck area in front of the house is limited because of the steep slope,” says Boutry. To overcome this challenge, he specified 11 panels of NanaWall’s SL45 Aluminum Framed Folding System across three openings, creating a dramatic connection to the surrounding landscape.

Maximizing Views with Limited Outdoor Space

The system capitalized on the home’s position, bringing cooling breezes and panoramic views into the living room while protecting the interior during inclement weather. When fully opened, the space transforms into a covered outdoor retreat.

“Truly, there was no other type of door system considered,” says Boutry. “Open or closed, the NanaWall doors are the perfect solution.”

An Ideal Folding Glass Wall for a Remodeling Project

“If the house were new,” notes Boutry, “we might have weighed using a sliding door system that retracts inside a wall.” For this renovation, however, the folding glass wall proved to be the ideal solution.

The panels neatly fold and stack to one side, leaving the opening largely unobstructed while avoiding the structural changes required for pocketing systems. Their smooth operation and ability to virtually disappear reinforced the client’s desire for minimalism and simplicity.

“NanaWall’s SL45 system allows my client to feel like he is outdoors while inside the house.”

Year-Round Performance with Panoramic Views

Beyond opening the home to sweeping city views, the system also delivers strong everyday performance. Boutry notes that the NanaWall doors provide excellent protection from wind, rain, and noise when closed while preserving expansive views when open.

Both architect and homeowner value the security offered by the stainless-steel hardware and robust construction, giving confidence that the home remains protected without sacrificing aesthetics or functionality.

“The owner is very satisfied with the system,” concludes Boutry.

“When the NanaWall is open, family and friends hear the calming waters over the glacier granite rocks while taking in panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. When closed, the NanaWall system creates a weather resistant barrier to the outside mountain elements.”
