The future of folding glass walls is here (and before long, everywhere)

Few places in the United States lend themselves to the architectural blending of indoor and outdoor spaces like Hawaii, Blenjust as few places are as likely to encounter severe tropical weather systems. "Maui has gorgeous sunny weather all year long," says Erika Alm, principal with PowerPlay, a resort-oriented real estate marketing firm. "But that also comes with some wind and heavy rain showers, given the tropical climate."
Weather Resistant Solution
While a senior vice president with Playground, Alm worked on the development of Honua Kai, the Maui resort and spa. Of the development of the resort’s condominiums, she recalls, "We were looking for a product that would seamlessly transform an indoor living space into an outdoor space, yet still provide strong assurances against wind and rain."
"We searched for a long time to find a door that could meet both of these objectives, maintain a visually appealing presence and meet strict guidelines from County Permitting regarding ingress and egress," Alm recalls.
With no other door system able to meet all of these requirements, the Honua Kai development team ultimately selected NanaWall's SL 60 Standard Thermally Broken Aluminum Framed Folding System, combined with a Screen Classic component. The system successfully transforms the living space of each apartment into outdoor living space, while thoroughly resisting the worst of tropical weather systems when closed.
"The system itself is visually appealing, delivers a high level of usability, and weathers the elements thoroughly," says Alm. "We have been immensely happy with the NanaWall System and would not hesitate to use them again."
“We Were Looking for a Product That Would Seamlessly Transform an Indoor Living Space into an Outdoor Space, Yet Still Provide Strong Assurances Against Wind and Rain.”
Alm and the other stakeholders in Honua Kai also encountered superior product support in the process. "We worked with the product team to ensure the NanaWall system could be configured to close tight against the wind and rain," she says. "The team was very helpful in working with us to augment the door-closing mechanism, ultimately meeting all county requirements."
All of NanaWall's custom-built systems boast highly regarded and provable engineering advances. Whether the challenge is wind loads, driving rain or snow, or frigid (or hot) air, NanaWall systems are NFRC-rated and ASHRAE-compliant facade components with excellent thermal insulating values as compared to other windows and glass doors.
The stainless steel runners, tracks and door hardware provide a high level of security. They also make the systems uniquely easy to use, with effortless, smooth operation for years and years after installation.
A Unique Selling Feature
But NanaWall's unique advantage is the complete transformation of indoor living space into an outdoor space, in seconds.
"The NanaWall doors are the single element of the project that guests and owners remark about the most – the ability to slide back an entire wall and reveal the outside, increasing your floor space and enhancing the apartment's usability in the warm weather," says Alm. "They have been a significant sales feature for this resort."
Alm offers a brief testimonial – and an endorsement in favor of using the products again in the future. "The NanaWall System worked better than we could have expected to meet all our objectives," she confirms. "We would recommend the use of the NanaWall Products to almost any developer or designer."
What our Customers Have to Say
With "order and light" as the watchwords of the renovation project of the interior of CompTIA, KUBE set about finding ways to create a feeling of openness, while also providing privacy through sound attenuation.
Visa One Market
“They love it and are extremely happy with the space. People love to walk around to soak in the view.”
"The home blends elegant, modern design with green building strategies, using a careful system of proportioning and scale. NanaWall operable glass doors function as ‘opening walls’ that define the living spaces without fully enclosing them and establish flow between the different spaces and activities. Much of the design blurs the line between inside and out and the NanaWall systems in several locations accentuate this effect.”
